St. Mary-Woods Stays Undefeated with Sweep Over Paul Quinn
Marshall, Texas (Alumni Gymnasium) - September 7, 2024 St. Mary-Woods College (12-0) continued its undefeated season with a commanding 3-0 win over Paul Quinn College (5-4) in non-conference volleyball action. The Pomeroys displayed dominance with set scores of 25-11, 25-16, and 25-17.
St. Mary-Woods' offense was powered by a strong showing from Alex Hernandez, who recorded 13 kills and hit an impressive .385 for the match. Isabel Hansen followed closely with 8 kills and a .615 hitting percentage, while Karla Melendez contributed 10 kills on a .189 clip. Setter Ariana Cruz was the engine behind the team's attack, tallying 18 assists, and the Pomeroys' defense was anchored by Jocelyn Chavez, who registered 17 digs.
The first set saw St. Mary-Woods struggle slightly with their hitting, finishing with a .167 hitting percentage, but they quickly found their rhythm, improving to .222 in the second set and .371 in the third. The team also registered 2 service aces and 4 blocks to help seal the victory.
Paul Quinn, despite flashes of promise, had difficulty maintaining consistency. Carrie Weston led her team with 5 kills, hitting .190, while Spirit Phipps added 3 kills on a .429 hitting percentage. Setter Teasia Cooks dished out 12 assists and contributed one service ace, but Paul Quinn struggled overall, finishing with a .008 team hitting percentage. Their performance in the first two sets, hitting -.059 and -.026 respectively, made it difficult to keep pace with the Pomeroys' efficient attack.
The Tigers showed improvement in the third set, hitting .156, but it was too little, too late as St. Mary-Woods closed out the match in just over an hour.
